Don’t Make This Framing Mistake: Skipping The Mats

An Unmatted Frame

A Matted Frame

Hi Friend,

Did you know one of the biggest mistakes you can make when framing is skipping the mat? Now, I’m not saying you need to custom frame every single photo or piece of art, but let me walk you through why using a mat can make all the difference—and share a few tips on how to frame those special pieces you have.

Here’s what not to do:

Using a mat helps draw your eye to the artwork itself. When choosing a mat, don't go wild with colour! Bright or bold mats (think red, orange, or blue) can make your frame look dated. Instead, stick with white or off-white. If your artwork is mostly white, consider a black or grey mat for contrast. But overall, white or off-white will almost always be a safe choice.

A quick tip for a polished look:

Instead of cramming your photo right to the edge of the frame, use a mat to give it space to breathe. It instantly upgrades the look and gives it a more refined, professional feel.

How to choose the right mat:

  • The smaller the artwork, the larger the mat should be.

  • Photos? Always a good idea to frame them with a mat.

  • Large pieces of art might not need a mat.

  • White or cream mats are usually your best bet for most pieces.

By following these simple tips, you'll see just how much a mat can transform your framed artwork!  You can also read our article to know more  about matted and unmatted frames.
